Hong Kong Exile is an interdisciplinary arts company based in Vancouver made up of three emerging contemporary artists. HKX creates theatrical, experimental work inspired by cultural politics in an era of globalization. For the last two years, the company has been investigating what possibilities lay in the realm of interdisciplinary collaboration. Hong Kong Exile explores and questions:
· The relationship between the “East” and the “West”
· Chinese identity within a Canadian context
· The formal and aesthetic traditions within dance, theatre, and new music
Since its inception Hong Kong Exile has presented four original pieces in various Vancouver venues including the Scotiabank Dance Centre, The Russian Hall, Cineworks Annex, and SFU’s Goldcorp Centre for the Arts. Their collaborative productions have featured dozens of local professional musicians, dancers, lighting designers and media artists.
Last Spring, Hong Kong Exile was awarded a five-month residency at New Westminster’s River Market. As Artists-in-Residence, the company was committed to bringing the vibrancy of downtown Vancouver’s arts scene to the community of New Westminster. Hong Kong Exile curated weekly film screenings and developed a legacy project of outdoor music performances, inviting both emerging and established artists into public spaces. It also hosted educational arts workshops, community outreach dance marathons, and open studios/rehearsals.
Last Fall, Hong Kong Exile produced and co-directed Ascension, a full length dance-music concert showcasing five emerging choreographers, six composers, and a live string quintet of UBC graduates.
The company is currently in production for their next work, eatingthegame to be presented at the CBC Broadcasting studio by local non-profit organization, Art for Impact. In June 2013, Hong Kong Exile will be performing at Chapel Arts, as part of an experimental site-specific showcase of key emerging contemporary arts companies in Vancouver.
